A Belgian brand, true expertise, a grenade jar… and one hundred years of stories to tell.

An adventure that begins with a meeting

It all started in 1926. A coffee roaster from Namur, a truck for sale, a mustard maker ready to hand over the reins… and a meeting that would change everything.

François Bister knew nothing about mustard at the time, but he went for it: he took over the machines, the stock, the brand and a closely guarded recipe, the Impériale.

The great Bister adventure had just begun.

The grenade jar, an explosive idea

A faceted jar, instantly recognisable. Behind this iconic design lies a nod to History, a stroke of marketing genius and a symbolic meaning that few people suspect.

We’ll tell you a little more at the museum. It’s a story that deserves to be told on site.

A family affair

Three generations of the Bister family have taken their turn at the helm: François, Jean, then Fabienne. Each of them has made sure that the “Belgian taste” remains intact, that the Impériale recipe never loses its touch, and that the spirit of the house is passed down like a table tradition.

Today, Arthus de Bousies is writing the next chapter with the same high standards and a strong ambition: to make Bister a benchmark for local, sustainable mustard.

A Belgian taste, one hundred years later

The first 100% Belgian mustard on the market. The first 100% Belgian mayonnaise, too. Bister continues to write its story while staying true to its values: Quality, Tradition, Authenticity and Boldness.

All while proving that you can have one foot in heritage and the other in the future.

The story continues… come and experience it

Anecdotes, historical objects, behind-the-scenes production: the Bister saga can be explored at La Maison de la Moutarde. And from the museum’s large windows, you’ll even see the Impériale come to life before your eyes, right up to the filling of the famous grenade jar.
